Dr Hannah Mikkonen, BSc. (Hons), PhD, CPSS

Hannah is a Principal Envi­ron­men­tal Scientist with over 14 years of consultancy experience in cont­a­m­i­nated land assessment and remediation. 

Project areas include envi­ron­men­tal impact assessment for large infra­struc­ture devel­op­ments (including road and rail), assessment and remediation of land, special­is­ing in heavy metal cont­a­m­i­na­tion and acid sulfate soils, assessment of groundwater impacts and seasonal groundwater trends, development of spoil management plans, assessment for statutory Envi­ron­men­tal Audit sites for residential and commercial land devel­op­ments and due diligence assessments. Hannah has managed small and large cont­a­m­i­nated land projects, technical advice regarding contaminant fate and transport (soil), contaminant distri­b­u­tion models, statistical inter­pre­ta­tion of data and commu­ni­ca­tion of results with clients and stake­hold­ers.

Hannah has completed her PhD in Envi­ron­men­tal Engineering, with RMIT University. Her research aims to assess the nature, distri­b­u­tion and potential toxicity of geogenic metals in Victorian Soils and includes development of statistical methods to distinguish cont­a­m­i­nated soil from areas of natural enrichment. Hannah's research is supported by the Australian Cont­a­m­i­nated Land Association and EPA Victoria. The outcomes of this research are hoped to support waste cate­gori­sa­tion policy.

Hannah is a committee member of the Victorian Soil Science Society and is involved in multiple activities which aim to improve communication of advances in assessment and management of contaminated land, bridging the gap between academics, consultants, regulators and the broader community.
