“Approaching each new task with a curious mindset rewards me with a deeper understanding of how the systems we interact with every day are built and function,” says mechanical engineer Sam Gerber.
Sam is an expert in energy efficiency—one of his key skills involves feasibility assessments on client sites to figure out if they can replace their existing fossil fuel infrastructure with district geothermal heat pump systems. “My favorite part of my job is seeing the infrastructure we are designing and constructing become part of the built environment. It's very rewarding seeing a building go up or a system be implemented and knowing that you played an important role in the process,” he says.
He’s also a pro in energy engineering, geothermal system design, HVAC systems, AutoCAD, Bentley MicroStation, and Revit. Notably, Sam’s work earned him the 2023 AEE Mid-Atlantic & Southeast Young Energy Professional of the Year award.
Of his favorite projects, Sam says, “I'm very proud to have worked on 1515 Surf Avenue and 1 Java Street, the two tallest residential buildings in New York State heated and cooled with a geothermal system. I'm also proud to be working on the Arverne East Development and Con Edison's Mount Vernon UTEN, two groundbreaking community-scale geothermal systems.”
“Working at CDM Smith allows me to be part of an incredibly talented team working on a wide variety of interesting projects, solving complex problems, and improving the communities we work in,” Sam says.
