Gunnar R. Emilsson, PG, PE, BCEE
Gunnar Emilsson, an expert in mined land restoration, is inspired by “working with our highly skilled and motivated staff to deliver solutions to our clients’ problems. Mining sites requires expertise from a wide range of technical disciplines. I'm very fortunate to have the support of so many skilled people.”
Gunnar has over three decades of experience performing and managing environmental and engineering investigations, designs, and remedial actions, specializing in the closure of large, complex mining and smelting sites in the West. He is currently working on remedial design and action in large areas of land reclamation and waste closures for one client, and on technical support for alternatives to close a cyanide heap leach gold mine for another.
Prior to joining the firm, he served as a mining engineer for the Montana Department of Environmental Quality, where he oversaw geotechnical investigations to analyze slope stability of tailings dams and open pit highwalls, performed engineering and geotechnical analyses under NEPA and calculated reclamation performance bonds for hard rock mines.
His proudest project is the EPA Anaconda Smelter Superfund site- one of the largest in the nation- in which he has supported for nearly 25 years. “I first helped EPA negotiate design elements and am now overseeing remedial action construction at one of the largest Superfund sites in the country,” Gunnar says. “Seeing herds of elk, antelope and even a few moose thriving on remediated and reclaimed waste impoundments that were once thousands of acres of barren land is a wonderful sight.”
