CDM Smith to Conduct Major Coal to Gas Conversions in Indiana
August 1, 2024

Petersburg, Ind.— The Babcock & Wilcox Company (B&W), a prime contractor for the utility company AES Indiana, has selected CDM Smith to conduct the AES Petersburg coal to gas conversions at the generating station in Petersburg, Indiana. The current limited notice to proceed contract phase is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2024, and the full plant conversions are to be completed by the end of 2026. With this project’s completion, AES Indiana will become the first Indiana investor-owned utility to cease burning coal.

The goal of this conversion project is to deliver cleaner, more efficient and cost-effective energy solutions to AES’s customers. CDM Smith will provide engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) services for the balance of the plant system, and support B&W’s design and construction of core process modifications. Natural gas will account for approximately 70% of the plants resource mix once the Petersburg conversions are complete, and the utility estimates that the refueling will reduce CO2 emissions by 70% by 2030 compared to 2018 levels. In addition, this project sustains the current plant workforce and helps retain $125,000 annually in the local economy, as the plant would otherwise be forced to shut down within the next few years.
This opportunity is significant because it provides our firm the opportunity to broaden our portfolio in coal to gas conversion
