Improving the Infrastructure in Northern Cyprus

Improving the Infrastructure in Northern Cyprus
European Commission, Brussels Northern Cyprus
CDM Smith has been working with local partners towards improving the infrastructure in Northern Cyprus on commission by the European Union.

Cyprus as its internationally recognised territory has been a member state of the European Union since 1 May 2004. For all practical purposes, however, this island state in the Eastern Mediterranean is divided with Greek Cypriots ruling in the south, and the TRNC, which is only recognised by Turkey, governing the northern part. The European Union is committed to reunification of the two parts of the country, and has therefore launched an aid programme for the Turkish Cypriot community. The European Union has been subsidising a host of economic and social projects since 2011.

One of the aid programme’s major aims is to expand and improve the infrastructure in Northern Cyprus with a view to alleviating serious deficiencies, especially in energy, transport, water supply and telecommunications. CDM Smith is providing consultancy services on water, wastewater, waste management and other environmental engineering projects to the European Commission and its delegation in Northern Cyprus over 6 years. We are supporting our client through carrying out organisational & technical programme management and technical consultancy for tendering and supervising, feasibility studies, reviewing of designs and construction supervision.

Our team acts as an intermediary between the EU, contractors, and the local beneficiaries towards a sustainable public infrastructure improvement.

Apart from purely organisational and technical services, our team will also be mediating between all stakeholders in a highly challenging political environment. We will be contributing to sustainable improvement in the public infrastructure for the benefit of the population while promoting communication and harmonisation between the two parts of the country.

The aim of this project is to help Cyprus grow together – not only infrastructurally, but also socially.

The Northern Cyprus project is unusal in so far as we are working directly for the European Commission. We support the members of the delegation in their local office and provide assistance.
